Gladys Sakowich Campus Center at Merrimack College

North Andover, MA

This expansion and renovation of the college’s former administration facility nearly doubled the size of the original building. As the site of the campus’s only kitchen and dining facility, the existing building had to remain in operation while construction proceeded around it. Safe access had to be guaranteed. Shoring and underpinning were critical, as the basement for the expansion was excavated contiguous to the original structure. Unforeseen underground conditions threatened the schedule and budget, but Erland’s value management expertise put both back on track. This campus center houses a variety of spaces for student activities including two dining areas, book store, post office, chapel, career services office, study lounges, and a recreation facility with an indoor track.
