Erland / Building a Universal Construction Safety Culture: Embracing the CARE Construction Safety Program
By Laurie Webber, Safety Officer
At Erland, safety is more than just a priority—it’s embedded in everything we do. As a dedicated participant in the AGC MA CARE Construction Safety Program, I am proud to be part of an initiative that strives to foster a universal construction safety culture across all jobsites industry-wide. Since its launch in 2022, the CARE program has become a pivotal element of our safety strategy. With contributions from construction managers, trade partners, and industry leaders, the program offers a comprehensive framework, including an orientation video, a worker database platform, and rich content designed to enhance safety standards throughout the industry.
The CARE Program stands out from other safety initiatives by encouraging collaboration among employers, allowing us to pool resources and make a significant, positive impact on both our organizations and the well-being of our workforce. It transcends conventional safety measures by emphasizing the importance of mental fitness—recognizing that cognitive well-being profoundly influences behavior and overall health. This holistic approach ensures that our work environments are not only physically safe but also psychologically inclusive, thereby contributing to a more resilient and flourishing workforce.
In light of the current labor shortage in the construction sector, the CARE Program is essential for connecting with a diverse range of workers from various cultural and economic backgrounds. It provides a structured framework that supports inclusivity and addresses the unique needs of this diverse workforce, helping to attract and retain talent. The CARE Program also promotes a seamless exchange of information between general contractors and trade partners, whether union or non-union, fostering a more cohesive, transparent, and productive industry landscape and collaborative working environment for all.
Safety truly resonates with us at Erland. Our commitment to protecting our workforce is reflected in our ongoing efforts to educate and empower each other. We aim to positively influence the broader construction industry through initiatives like the CARE Program. Erland also has an in-house safety committee that is comprised of a diverse group of employees with varied backgrounds. We convene regularly to provide recommendations that enhance our safety initiatives, ensuring we adhere to Erland and OSHA standards, the CARE Program, and site-specific safety plans. Our committee conducts unannounced jobsite inspections, analyzes potential safety trends, and implements preventive measures to address and mitigate recurring incidents.
When everyone takes responsibility for safety, we create a stronger safety culture where potential hazards are more readily identified and addressed. It fosters a sense of shared commitment and accountability, ensuring that safety isn’t just a priority but a fundamental part of our daily operations. This collective effort not only helps in preventing accidents and injuries but also enhances overall project quality and performance.
In essence, safety is a team effort that requires building a supportive environment where everyone feels empowered to speak up, share observations, and contribute ideas for improvement. By working together and embracing a proactive approach, we can create a safer, more efficient, and resilient workplace. The CARE Program's core principles—Consciousness, Alignment, Respect, and Empowerment—align seamlessly with our own safety values. By integrating these principles, we aim to advance our safety practices and elevate safety standards across the construction industry.
