Erland / Behind the Build: How Erland’s Quality Committee Elevates Every Project

By Dennis Akin, Project Executive & Chair of Erland's Quality Committee
At Erland, quality isn’t an afterthought. It’s embedded in every step of our process. One of the ways we support this mindset is through our internal Quality Committee.
Comprising employees from various departments, including field operations, project management, safety, coordination, and more, our committee collaborates to define, prioritize, and monitor quality performance company-wide. We’re committed to ensuring that our dedication to excellence yields consistent results on every project we undertake.
As Chair of the committee, I help facilitate regular meetings where we review the effectiveness of our Quality Program, identify opportunities for improvement, and establish key metrics that guide performance. We also coordinate lessons learned, support field implementation, and share best practices across teams to strengthen our overall approach.
But our role doesn’t stop at oversight—we’re involved directly in the execution. For every project, two committee members are assigned as peer reviewers. Selected based on their relevant experience, these individuals help develop the project-specific Quality Program, conduct bi-weekly jobsite visits, and recap their observations with the full committee every six weeks. This feedback loop allows us to support project teams in real time while maintaining consistency and accountability across the organization.
This peer-review structure helps us:
- Address discrepancies before they impact schedule or cost
- Reduce unnecessary change orders
- Clarify details and design interpretations early
- Uncover opportunities for value and efficiency
The result? A more transparent and reliable process, along with a better experience for our clients.
At Erland, we believe quality is a shared responsibility. Our committee exists to make sure every team member, trade partner, and stakeholder has the tools and support needed to build it right the first time.
